[J7980]30 days

When I began to do the story and photograph the family, I had no idea what autism was. I thought kids of autism just tend to stay alone. I didn't know how much pain they had in their brain, eyes and ears. I didn't know how much work it took to make them learn how to talk and make eye contact with others.

It takes more than 30 days to finish a story like this. And I'm glad I made it into a multimedia slideshow.

The story line of the multimedia slideshow is more from Thomas Jackson and her father Kimberly Matthews's perspective, and has more photos I've shot last years.

The photo story has a more balanced story line, which combines photos of Thomas Jackson and his sister Malinda Jackson.

(This is a photo that I have no idea how to fix/tone.)

Kimberly Matthews leads the pray before her two kids, Thomas and Malinda sleep. Matthews got divorced with Eugene Jackson and move to the house two doors next to his one on April 7, 2007, two years after Thomas was diagnosed with autism.

Malinda fights with Thomas for a frisbee at Stephens Lake Park on Sunday afternoon, April 27, 2013. Their mother Kimberly Mathews tries to make sure that every day Thomas and Malinda can do something together so that Thomas can get involved and pay attention to his sister.

Kimberly Matthews teaches Thomas Jackson how to tie a rope at Boy Scout night in Blue Ridge Elementary School, Nov 7, 2012. Thomas was diagnosed with autism when he was one-year old.

Eugene Jackson does the cleaning after Thomas left vegetables on the floor. Thomas spends every Tuesday afternoon with his father. When Matthews moved to the new house with her kids in 2007, Thomas kept saying that “I want to go home, my other home” to his mother.

Eugene Jackson lifts Malinda upside down at Matthews’ house on Sunday evening. Malinda thinks her tight body and gymnastic talent make her special.

Malinda cries after Thomas ignored her request to play with him at Tony’s Pizza on Nov. 18, 2012. “Every time Thomas ignores me, it makes me feel sad and alone.” Malinda says.

Eugene Jackson takes Thomas to Westlake ACE Hardware to fix Matthews’ fan on Tuesday afternoon, April 3, 2013.

Malinda Jackson plays hide-and-seek with another kid she met at the cake decoration class in Joann Fabric and Craft store Saturday evening, April 21, 2013. Malinda has some behavioral issues at school because she is into getting attention. Since more attention has been given to Thomas, Matthews intentionally spends every Saturday evening with Malinda.

Kimberly Matthews and the Jacksons enjoy their Sunday afternoon in front of Matthews’s house on April 21, 2013. Matthews wants her kids still have a good relationship with their father even though they got divorced.

Kimberly Matthews, Thomas and Eugene Jackson enjoy the reading night while Malinda Jackson is not very interested.
